English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Coordinator

Role

The WSMP ESOL Coordinator supports local authorities in Wales to make sure resettled families are accessing appropriate ESOL classes in order to promote integration into local communities. The Welsh Government ESOL Policy ensures that classes are available free of charge, but where classes are over-subscribed or not at the right level, the coordinator will help local authorities commission bespoke ESOL provision or encourage providers to extend their offering in those areas.

ESOL Coordinators meet regularly to share ideas and best practice, such as online support from the British Council and Excellence Gateway, as well as highlighting resources to support volunteers and ESOL support provided by NATECLA for example.

It is recognised that in some areas the ability to speak Welsh can be an aid to integration and finding employment, and refugees can ask for support in accessing Welsh classes should they wish.

The ESOL Coordinator is also active in helping local authorities improve the journey to employability for families, and works with partners such as the REACH+ ESOL Hub in the Wales dispersal areas and other partners across Wales and the UK.
