Councils welcome Welsh Government plan to reduce burdens

Tuesday, 02 May 2023

The WLGA has today warmly welcomed a commitment by Welsh Government to reduce administrative burdens on local authorities,

In a Written Statement published today, the Minister for Finance and Local Government has set out commitments to pay fewer ringfenced grants and make improvements to the grant paying system, and to reduce the administrative burden on local authorities.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, WLGA Leader said:

“We warmly welcome today’s statement by the Minister which galvanises local government’s role as a trusted partner in the governance of Wales.

“Local government has long made the case for more flexibility in administration and grant management. Eliminating such unnecessary bureaucracy will help to ease pressure on councils which, in turn, will help them to focus on delivering for their residents.

“We have very much appreciated the Minister’s continued co-operation, and her constructive approach to partnership working. We will look forward to continuing our fruitful joint working with Welsh Government, based on a new set of agreed principles.”
