WLGA thanks Gwynedd Council Leader for his public service

Friday, 09 December 2016

Council and also from his roles as Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) Deputy Presiding Officer, Plaid Group Leader and Spokesperson for Housing and the Welsh Language in May 2017.

Commenting on the announcement Cllr Bob Wellington, Leader of the WLGA thanked Dyfed and said:

“The announcement that Councillor Dyfed Edwards is to stand down as Leader of Gwynedd Council sees the departure of one of the most respected councillors in Wales.”

“Dyfed has represented the community of Penygroes since 2004 and became Leader of Gwynedd council in 2008 and throughout that time his commitment to working together beyond the political divide to further the cause of local government has been commendable. He can be particularly proud of policies and initiatives such as the Welsh Language Schools Charter, raising the profile of housing for its contribution to well-being, investment in new schools and leading the positive response local authorities have provided in Wales to resettle refugee families from Syria escaping war and conflict.”

Steve Thomas, Chief Executive of the WLGA said:

“Councillor Edward’s steps down after leading the authority through a difficult period, particularly in relation to austerity and the ongoing debate about local government reform whilst ensuring services such as Education and Social Care are in good health and well placed for the future.”

“Dyfed’s belief and passion for social justice and the Welsh language and his optimism for the future will be remembered fondly throughout local government in the years to come.”

“All leaders across Wales recognise the dedicated service he has given and wish Councillor Dyfed Edwards a long and happy retirement when he steps down next May.”
