Local Government delegation visits Brussels for talks on vital EU funding

Wednesday, 11 July 2012

At a crucial time in the negotiations on future EU funding, a local government delegation from Wales has this week travelled to Brussels to meet with Commission officials and MEPs.

EU funding is vital to Welsh communities and as the current seven year funding period comes to an end (in 2013), the WLGA has been lobbying on behalf of Welsh councils to ensure that their communities achieve the best possible deal from future funding programmes. The working visit is an opportunity to meet with Commission officials and Welsh MEPs to learn more about recent developments on the future programmes and to have discussions with local government colleagues from England and Scotland about the shape and direction of EU funding post 2013.

Cllr Bob Bright (Newport), WLGA Spokesperson for European Affairs said:

“This is a crucial time for Welsh local authorities in terms of European funding. The debate is intensifying in Brussels on the future of Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy post-2013, two Policies vital to Welsh local authorities in terms of their funding programmes.”

“The WLGA has been heavily involved in the debate on future EU funding to date and this week is an opportune time for a local government delegation to visit Brussels to continue to ensure the voice of local authorities is heard by the key players and decision makers.”
